01 — For clinicians

What SleepShutter records overnight — and what it doesn't.

SleepShutter is an iPhone app that records snoring events through the night and saves the video and audio around each one. It lets a person see what actually happens while they sleep and, when it matters, bring that recording to a clinician.

02 — Straight answers

What it does, and what it doesn't

Does

What the app records

  • Snoring events detected across the night, with start and end times
  • Night vision that works in a fully dark room — TrueDepth infrared, switched on automatically
  • Video and audio saved around each event, including the seconds before it
  • A timeline of the whole night to scroll through in the morning, with body-turn detection

In development: breathing-pause detection, classifying the site of collapse, matching an intraoral appliance to the cause, sleeping-position detection.

Doesn't

What the app does not do

  • It does not diagnose, and it does not replace a sleep study. Identifying sleep apnea takes polysomnography or a home sleep apnea test, read by a clinician.
  • It has not been measured against a reference standard. Our accuracy figures so far come from our own hand-labelled recordings and a held-out test set — internal, not validated against polysomnography. The full method and the numbers behind it are available on request, and we will publish them once there is a reference-standard comparison.
  • It does not give treatment advice. Appliance matching is still in development and does not replace a clinician's judgement.
  • It does not send recordings anywhere. Processing happens on the phone.

03 — What we ask of a clinical consultant

Review documents. No participant recruitment.

01

Screening and exclusions

The participant screening questionnaire and the exclusion criteria.

02

Contraindications

The contraindication list for intraoral appliance use.

03

Adverse events

The reporting procedure, and the principles for classifying events.

Not asked

What we do not ask for

  • No participant contact, no recruitment, no access to participant identities
  • No use of patients or records of your institution
  • No IRB submission on your side, and no involvement of your institution's administration
  • The role is consultant, not co-investigator

Fees

Hours and rate are set by you

For a funded project, agreed at the time of an award or when consultation is actually requested — plus a few consultation hours per year during the period of performance.

For product design consultation: your hourly rate.

04 — What the app captures

One night, as the phone saw it

The app's journal for one night: a scrollable chart of the night's audio with marks for snoring, body turns and night vision, above the list of individual snoring runs.
One night's journal. Every snoring run is laid out end to end and can be played back.
Playback in the app during a snoring event: an infrared frame of a sleeper in a dark room, labelled Snoring, with the audio waveform beneath it.
Playback at one event: the infrared frame with the audio underneath. Night vision switches on by itself when the room goes dark.

Screens from a development build.

Working

Runs overnight in real bedrooms

Recording, night vision and the morning timeline all run on the phone.
